The Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 held its 46th annual motorsport competition across the Baja peninsula and over a most treacherous journey through the wild deserts and into the untamed mystique of Northern Mexico. Known as the world’s most arduous non-stop off road racing event, the Baja 1000 demands every ounce of courage that one could muster just to even take the green flag and start down the course at speed. Braver than most, BJ Baldwin, dominated Baja in a King Shock equipped Chevrolet Silverado Trophy Truck and crossed the finish line during the early hours of Saturday morning on November 16, 2013 to claim the overall victory. Baldwin completed the 883 mile event in just over 18 hours 36 minutes at an average speed of 47.5 MPH.
The winners of the top buggy divisions; Damien Jefferies of Class 1 and Brad Wilson in Class 10 also utilized King Off Road Racing Shocks to conquer the grueling terrain and earn the top finishing positions. In all, 10 different class-winning vehicles were outfitted with King Shocks. A notable statistic that outlines results in an event where only 125 out of 251 participants (just 49.8 percent of the field) were able to even complete the course within the designated set time of competition.
The super high-grade materials and quality construction used to manufacture all King Shocks suspension components makes all the difference where durability is the fundamental aspect in keeping your race moving forward. Maintaining an effort worthy of winning requires intense focus, physical agility and mental strength. Lasting through nearly a thousand miles of non-stop punishment will drain the most competent athlete’s endurance and willpower. A plush ride designed and finely tuned by experienced experts will allow the drivers to conserve precious energy while racing over the endless miles of rough uneven terrain.
In an exceptional feat of determination, combined with concentrated preparation, BJ Baldwin earned this latest victory by completing the entire event as a solo driver. “The truck can only take so much and your body can only take so much mentally and physically,” Baldwin illustrated the enormous challenge of iron manning the race. “… I just put this thing on the chip and let it eat up the bumps.” BJ has now captured 2 consecutive Baja 1000 wins, back-to-back SCORE Trophy Truck Championships, and the overall World Championship, all equipped with King Shocks.
The 2014 Baja 1000 marked a milestone turning point in this historic events legacy. Roger Norman, SCORE-International’s new promoter setup a challenging loop course that no doubt preludes a new chapter of where off road desert racing is headed. Starting in Ensenada, winding through rocky trails, opening up into the rough open desert, picking routes through endless silt beds, and ending back in Ensenada 883 miles later; Racing in Baja is now more difficult than ever.
Rebooted 4 Wheel Parts Riverside Store Hitting on All Cylinders
The 4 Wheel Parts Riverside, California store held a November 9 event to celebrate its new, state-of-the-art design. The event featured exclusive onsite discounts, giveaways, installation deals, and free food and entertainment. Referred to as store 2.0, the layout signals the dawning of a new era for 4 Wheel Parts. The revamped location’s leading edge design has interactive, hands-on displays, thousands more products, and areas for customers to learn more about products.
So far, the reboot has met with overwhelming approval from customers. “We’ve had great feedback from the public since the new design,” says Riverside Store Manager Robb Hadden. “Customers tell me they love the interaction and being able to actually touch the products. One guy said it’s not like walking into a Pep Boys where you wander the aisles – it’s more like Disneyland.”
The Riverside location upped its inventory so there is more product in stock on the floor. “The store gives a unique shopping experience closely related to Apple stores,” says Brent Goegebuer, Transamerican Auto Parts’ Marketing Director. “Our customers are staying there longer to try different things.”
Throughout North America, 4 Wheel Parts has over 60 retail outlets selling everything from products for trucks to Jeep Wrangler parts and accessories. All locations, including the Riverside store, have service bays with onsite installation by ASE-trained technicians.
“This marks the start of our retail locations advancing from a parts-focused sales model to a solutions based model,” says Kevin Rourke, 4 Wheel Parts Director, e-Commerce and Internet Operations. “Our retail space has been re-conceptualized to empower customers with informational displays, more learning tools about products, and a more interactive experience.”
The Riverside 4 Wheel Parts store is on the verge of launching an online Google virtual tour of its showroom, allowing users to navigate the premises and service bays. The interactive tour will present high resolution images of off-road 4×4 parts and accessories that will be shareable via social media.

Okay, we’ve been pretty hard on Toyota lately with their latest ad campaign. That being said, things are looking up for Toyota with their latest announcement. Travis Rice, world class snowboarder and Red Bull team rider, is now a member of Team Toyota. This team includes other snowboarders Louie Vito, Elena Hight and pro skiier Simon Dumont. It also includes pro skateboarder and switch-stance master Bob Burnquist.
We’d love to see a bunch of ads featuring all these great athletes. They absolutely kill it!
Rice has won X-Games gold and done tons of legit video parts. According to RedBull.com:
– His friends call him Trice
– He was born on October 9, 1982 in Wyoming
– His philosophy of life is you only get one chance, don’t waste it
– His favorite food is sushi or ice-cream
– His favorite music is Finnish techno
“I’m floored to join Team Toyota and collaborate on some upcoming projects. Toyota is such a rock solid organization with a seriously dependable product that is going to be an asset for my whole team,” said Rice.
Rice currently appears in the “Keep It Wild” marketing campaign for the 2014 Toyota 4Runner. The campaign centers on a series of videos featuring Rice, along with motorsports veteran Andy Bell and whitewater kayaker Rush Sturges, exploring the open space of his native Jackson Hole, Wy. Videos can be viewed on the Toyota USA YouTube channel beginning October 9, Rice’s birthday. Hopefully they’ll appear on TV too!
Rice is currently working with DC Shoes to create a snowboarding-themed Tacoma for the DC x Toyota Let’s Go Places Build Off contest. The Ford F150, the best-selling American-made pickup truck in recent decades, needs no introduction. It boasts many options and models that its rivals cannot match and the 2012 and 2013 model years continue this dominance with four engines to choose from, three body styles, and nine different trim levels. The base engine in the 2012 and 2013 Ford F150 is a 3.7 liter V6 that pumps out an impressive 302 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque while still only sipping fuel with an estimated 23 miles per gallon on the highway.
Even with impressive factory horsepower numbers from the base engine option, 2012 and 2013 Ford F150 3.7 liter owners can gain a simple increase in horsepower and engine performance with the K&N 77-2585KS performance air intake system. The 77-2585KS is precision-engineered with a mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube to streamline airflow and heat shield to help protect incoming air from heat under the hood. The RC-5173 conical air filter on the end of the intake tube is oversized to help reduce restriction while maintaining excellent air filtration. It is also washable and reusable, and can go for up to 100,000 miles between cleanings depending on driving conditions.
On the dyno, the 77-2585KS performance air intake system produced an estimated additional 11.9 horsepower at 5536rpm, and 10.3 pound-feet of torque at 3333rpm over the stock intake system.
The 77-2585KS is backed by K&N’s famous Million Mile Limited Warranty. It’s easy to install, maintains all necessary factory connections, and does not require any additional modifications to the vehicle.
Performance air intake 77-2585KS is engineered to fit the models listed below:
2013 Ford F150 3.7L V6
2012 Ford F150 3.7L V6

Have you ever heard of AutoLoanDaily.com? How about UFC fighter Jon Fitch? Well, neither had we until an article appeared on AutoLoanDaily.com’s website earlier this month. Jon Fitch is a former UFC fighter and now fights in the World Series of fighting. Not only that, but he also owns a sick Toyota truck with a 7″ lift, 20’s and 37’s. The custom paint, RBP grill, and engine mods look amazing (and sound) amazing. It appears that California Wheels in San Jose is the place where Jon had the truck done. This is an intimidating lifted truck for an intimidating fighter.

SDHQ recently had the pleasure of working on their new friend John’s black 2013 Raptor Supercrew. John ready to go all out on this beast! John brought SDHQ a pretty well equipped Hennessey 475 Raptor sporting some 20” wheels and Nitto Trail Grapplers, but it’s current configuration just wasn’t enough. SDHQ installed a whipple supercharger with an upgraded core and heat exchanger to get a lot more air to the motor to really wake this monster up. To help corral in all the added power, this Raptor is now sporting a complete EBC Brake System upgrade along with SDHQ’s signature stainless steel braided brake lines.
To make sure John could handle the roughest terrain imaginable, SDHQ set him up with Icon Vehicle Dynamics’ 3.0 Coilovers and Bypasses along with Camburg uniball upper and lower control arms. The front end was polished off with SDHQ Chromoly Tie Rods and SPC Alignment Cams. To ensure the rear end could keep up with the front, they got some help from friends at Deaver suspension to get John set up with their +2 leaf spring kit and SDHQ’s hydraulic bump stop kit. To give this Raptor a little face lift, SDHQ added front and rear Raptor Trophy Truck Bumpers. To make sure John can light up the night, they added two, 24″ Vision X Xmitter Prime Xtreme Bars in the front bumper and two 12″ Xmitter Lo Profile Prime LED Bars in the rear bumper.
SDHQ is an offroad shop based out of Gilbert, Arizona that specializes in highly capable, performance based offroad vehicles. Celebrating their 14th year in business, SDHQ continues to deliver quality builds and products for the offroad enthusiast and racing community.

Team Menzies Motorsports recently rolled into Joilet, Illinois with high hopes. They were anxious to get the Traxxes TORC event at the Route 66 Raceway, which is located at the Chicagoland Speedway Complex, underway. The team’s standings in the points race were already impressive, and they were eager to, at the least, solidify and hopefully increase their leads.
However, one thing was different at this particular event – the rainy conditions that had seemingly been following the event from venue to venue during the 2013 season had failed to show up. It was a welcomed change enjoyed by all of the drivers.
Scheduled to run in the Pro-4 class, Menzies driver, Ricky Johnson qualified 3rd fastest at the beginning of the opening night, earning him a second-row start.
At the start of the race, he immediately embarked upon a battle with Scott Douglas, a brawl that would last the first couple of laps. But during his quest for the lead position, Johnson’s vehicle spun around, costing him several positions. The Menzies driver wouldn’t consider letting up though and managed to muscle his way back to third place before crossing the finish line.
The team was well represented during the second race of the night, as team members, Bryce Menzies and Travis Pastrana were both scheduled to run in the Pro-2 class. Pastrana started in front of Bryce at the beginning of the race and was holding his own; that is, until he suffered a flat tire deep into the event.
Menzies, on the other hand, was plagued with bad luck early on, as he spun out while battling Chad Hord for position. The driver’s no-quit attitude brought him back into the thick of things later in the race, but Menzies once again spun out in the same turn. However, Bryce kept on pushing and eventually worked his way back into third place at the waving of the checkered flag.
When asked the team’s thoughts during Menzies string of unlucky occurrences, Menzies Director of Logistics and Media, Dane Roney, said, “We weren’t too worried. We know Bryce is a great driver. Consistency wins championships.”
Team Menzies returned the following night with aspirations of earning even more spots on the podium. Starting the night off, Ricky Johnson, once again found himself in a heated battle for the third place position. Upon distancing himself from those drivers, he focused on the two trucks ahead of him. But the laps ran out before he could move into the first two spots, leaving him with a third place finish.
As the Pro-2 class race neared, tension grew amongst the Menzies team. Having raced earlier that day in the Global Rallycross series, at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, Bryce barely arrived back at the Chicagoland Speedway in time to get strapped in and compete in the race.
“Leading up to the race, it got pretty close,” recalled Roney. “But we got lucky. There was a weather delay that gave Bryce a little extra time to get ready.”
Well, the fans definitely got their money’s worth during this particular race, as Bryce and Chad Hord began the race neck and neck and continued to battle for the lead position throughout the entire race. Menzies finally took the lead after the mid-way yellow flag. With no intentions of dropping the fruits of his hard work and perseverance, he savored clean air and took the checkered flag, earning his respectful position at the top of the podium.
With their recent success at the Chicagoland Speedway in the rearview mirror and the remaining races of the season in front of the them, team Menzies is anticipating the possibilities of putting even more championships under their belts. And judging from previous seasons, they know exactly what it takes to get it done.
Team Menzies are noted for their driving skills. But they also have an acute understanding that there are several other factors in consistent success.
Of course the entire team plays a huge role in the podium positions that the drivers experience. “Each person is important,” explained Roney. We each play a part in keeping the machine running. Although some roles may appear larger than others, each one is equally as important.”
With an impressive crew of drivers and a team that works like a well-oiled machine, the third ingredient to the recipe to their success is a conviction to follow a stringent maintenance program. That being said, Menzies Motorsports depend upon K&N products to fill their filtering needs.
“Our team takes pride in making sure, before we show up at the track, we have all of our “I”s dotted and “T”s crossed,” ensured Roney. “We use K&N filters, pre-wraps, in-line filters, air filter oils carb base gaskets and extreme high-flow air filter tops.
“We use these products on all of our trucks – Pro 2, Pro 4, Trophy Truck, Pre-runner, buggy and our chase vehicles. K&N’s products play a vital role in our success, because they stand up in the harshest conditions.
“The key to success going into the final race of the year will be just like every other weekend of the season,” explained Roney. “Show up prepared and be ready to work hard until everything is loaded up to leave.
“Fans can expect us to be available for questions and our drivers available for autographs and photos, because they are the driving force behind our success. We hope to see a bunch of new and familiar faces out at Prim, Nevada for the final stop of our short-course season.”
“The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed and the OCCR crew made their way to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Rounds 13&14 of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, where consistency is key and championship hopes are on the line.
Although the 2013 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season is almost a wrap, there is still a lot that can be lost in the last remaining rounds of the series. If you don’t stay consistent, you will watch a championship slip right through your fingers. Heading into Round 13, Sheldon Creed was sitting in a very vulnerable 3rd place position in the over-all points standings. With the 2011 and 2012 Pro Lite Champion sitting right in front of him in first and second, the pressure was on.
Qualifying in the second place position for Round 13, “The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed took the green flag at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in total darkness. Creed experienced a radio communication malfunction shortly after driver introductions took place. “The Prodigy” was left to figure it out all on his own and unable to communicate with Spotter Scott Creed. Green flag racing was underway and the entire Pro Lite Unlimited field made a mad dash for turn 1. Shortly into Lap 2, 2012 Pro Lite champion RJ Anderson made a costly mistake in front of Creed, which ultimately ended his day and moved Sheldon one position closer to the front of the field.
After the full course red flag caused by RJ Anderson’s crash, racing resumed in full chaos once again. Black and yellow flags added drama to the entire remainder of the race. Lap 10 was the changing point for Creed, after being shuffled as far back as fifth place. He had finally found the momentum needed and was able to work his way into the second place position after a long battle with Casey Currie and Chris Brandt. Creed held his position and found himself standing on the podium after a hard fought battle and a well deserved second place finish.
Round 14 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series was just as nerve-wracking as Round 13. It takes an entire season to build but can disappear in a matter of seconds. Talking about the hunt for a championship, “The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed knows how important Round 14 is to the entire OCCR crew.
Creed once again qualified 1st in the Pro Lite division and after pulling a fourth on the inversion, he started in the second row behind RJ Anderson and Bradley Morris.
When the green flag dropped it wasn’t long before Creed started making his move back up to the first place position where he feels most comfortable. Creed was able to make his way past RJ Anderson before the end of lap 2, however knew he still had a lot of racing left to do. Anderson and Creed battled back and forth between full course yellow cautions for the entire 14 lap main event. Nine laps into the race, Creed found himself in the number one position after a mishap by Bradley Morris.
Shortly after taking the lead, RJ Anderson would run Creed wide up against the wall forcing him to make a split second decision to play it safe and continue to the checkered flag. With two more yellow flags within two laps, Sheldon held onto 2nd place until the 2011 Pro Lite champion Brian Deegan was able to make a pass on the white flag lap leaving Sheldon to settle for a 3rd place finish.
Sheldon Creed left Sin City with two podiums, two fast lap awards, and positioned himself 2nd in the overall points standings.
As if two days of racing weren’t enough, Sheldon headed to Costa Mesa for a third race in Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks at the Sand Sports Super Show. Sunday’s race was full of carnage and definitely left the crowd pleased. Sheldon spent the majority of the race in the front, staying in the pack of Robby Gordon, Justin Lofton and BJ Baldwin, who stepped in to take over driving duties for Rino Navera. Robby Gordon launched his truck a bit too hard off the jump heading in to the sand and rolled, taking on heavy damage to the truck. Justin Lofton battled all the way back to finish second after pulling in to the pits on lap 5 for a fresh tire. But in the end it was Sheldon Creed who endured the rest of the field and earned his second SST victory of the season.
Sheldon Creed went on to say, “Going into the weekend I knew I had to finish strong in Las Vegas if I wanted to stay in the points race. Being able to podium both days at LOORRS and taking 1st on Sunday at SST was a better outcome than I could have hoped for and I couldn’t have done it without my awesome team and my great sponsors.”
Sheldon and team would like to thank their sponsors who help make racing possible:
