“The Prodigy” Doubles Down in Las Vegas
“The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed and the OCCR crew made their way to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Rounds 13&14 of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, where consistency is key and championship hopes are on the line.
Although the 2013 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season is almost a wrap, there is still a lot that can be lost in the last remaining rounds of the series. If you don’t stay consistent, you will watch a championship slip right through your fingers. Heading into Round 13, Sheldon Creed was sitting in a very vulnerable 3rd place position in the over-all points standings. With the 2011 and 2012 Pro Lite Champion sitting right in front of him in first and second, the pressure was on.
Qualifying in the second place position for Round 13, “The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed took the green flag at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in total darkness. Creed experienced a radio communication malfunction shortly after driver introductions took place. “The Prodigy” was left to figure it out all on his own and unable to communicate with Spotter Scott Creed. Green flag racing was underway and the entire Pro Lite Unlimited field made a mad dash for turn 1. Shortly into Lap 2, 2012 Pro Lite champion RJ Anderson made a costly mistake in front of Creed, which ultimately ended his day and moved Sheldon one position closer to the front of the field.
After the full course red flag caused by RJ Anderson’s crash, racing resumed in full chaos once again. Black and yellow flags added drama to the entire remainder of the race. Lap 10 was the changing point for Creed, after being shuffled as far back as fifth place. He had finally found the momentum needed and was able to work his way into the second place position after a long battle with Casey Currie and Chris Brandt. Creed held his position and found himself standing on the podium after a hard fought battle and a well deserved second place finish.
Round 14 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series was just as nerve-wracking as Round 13. It takes an entire season to build but can disappear in a matter of seconds. Talking about the hunt for a championship, “The Prodigy” Sheldon Creed knows how important Round 14 is to the entire OCCR crew.
Creed once again qualified 1st in the Pro Lite division and after pulling a fourth on the inversion, he started in the second row behind RJ Anderson and Bradley Morris.
When the green flag dropped it wasn’t long before Creed started making his move back up to the first place position where he feels most comfortable. Creed was able to make his way past RJ Anderson before the end of lap 2, however knew he still had a lot of racing left to do. Anderson and Creed battled back and forth between full course yellow cautions for the entire 14 lap main event. Nine laps into the race, Creed found himself in the number one position after a mishap by Bradley Morris.
Shortly after taking the lead, RJ Anderson would run Creed wide up against the wall forcing him to make a split second decision to play it safe and continue to the checkered flag. With two more yellow flags within two laps, Sheldon held onto 2nd place until the 2011 Pro Lite champion Brian Deegan was able to make a pass on the white flag lap leaving Sheldon to settle for a 3rd place finish.
Sheldon Creed left Sin City with two podiums, two fast lap awards, and positioned himself 2nd in the overall points standings.
As if two days of racing weren’t enough, Sheldon headed to Costa Mesa for a third race in Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks at the Sand Sports Super Show. Sunday’s race was full of carnage and definitely left the crowd pleased. Sheldon spent the majority of the race in the front, staying in the pack of Robby Gordon, Justin Lofton and BJ Baldwin, who stepped in to take over driving duties for Rino Navera. Robby Gordon launched his truck a bit too hard off the jump heading in to the sand and rolled, taking on heavy damage to the truck. Justin Lofton battled all the way back to finish second after pulling in to the pits on lap 5 for a fresh tire. But in the end it was Sheldon Creed who endured the rest of the field and earned his second SST victory of the season.
Sheldon Creed went on to say, “Going into the weekend I knew I had to finish strong in Las Vegas if I wanted to stay in the points race. Being able to podium both days at LOORRS and taking 1st on Sunday at SST was a better outcome than I could have hoped for and I couldn’t have done it without my awesome team and my great sponsors.”
Sheldon and team would like to thank their sponsors who help make racing possible:

A Pair of Top Five Qualifying Efforts Have Casey Currie Ready to Go All In as LOORS Returns to Las Vegas
CORONA, Calif. (September 20, 2013) – After a great start to the second-to-last weekend of Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORS) competition, Casey Currie and the Monster Energy/General Tire team will carry a pair of top five qualifying efforts into the 13th and 14th rounds of the Pro Lite season. The action from the series’ second to visit Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2013 kicks off Friday night, followed by a second showing under the lights on Saturday.
Since the arrival of the Monster Energy/General Tire Jeep JK, Currie and his team have continued to step up their performance every time they take to the track. After logging laps for the first time on Thursday morning for practice, Currie and his team fine-tuned the truck for an all-out assault of the track in qualifying. At the end of two sessions, the Monster Energy/General Tire Jeep JK will line up fourth during each night of action.
“We’ve been where we need to be with the Jeep JK to challenge for wins, but luck just hasn’t always been on our side,” explained Currie. “But we refuse to put our heads down and we came out on Thursday gunning for the pole in each session. A top five spot is a good place to start for us and we’ll take advantage of it once the green flag drops.”
As the team inches closer to finally securing its first win of the season, a little history is also on the line in an effort to become the first Jeep to sit atop the podium in LOORS competition.
After a pair of top 10’s results at the previous stop in Reno, Currie currently sits fifth in the Pro Lite standings heading into Las Vegas. With four podium finishes to his credit this season, another strong and consistent weekend for Currie will undoubtedly make him a factor in the battle for the Pro Lite crown. Coincidentally, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the site of Currie’s best weekend of 2013 back in April when he claimed back-to-back runner-up efforts.
“When we left here in April we walked away with the points lead, so there’s no doubt that the front of the field is where we need to be and where we expect to be,” added Currie. “I really enjoy the Vegas track and I’m looking forward to putting the momentum back on our side.”
This weekend’s return to “Sin City” is highlighted by the second and final night race of the season. Currie has an affinity for racing under the lights and it’s only adding to his anticipation to put the Monster Energy/General Tire Jeep JK on the line and make a charge to victory.
“We’re here to win. It’s a simple as that,” concluded Currie. “My guys have put in too much work to not have a chance to enjoy what its like to win, so it’s the only thing on my mind the next two nights.”
The first round of Pro Lite competition this weekend kicks off at 8:30 PM PST on Friday, and follows the same schedule on Saturday night.
Tickets for this weekend’s action are still available through the LOORS website for Friday, Saturday, or the entire weekend. Fans unable to make it out to the track can keep up to date on everything from Las Vegas Motor Speedway through Live Timing and Scoring.

SEMA truck
Andrew Lowe obviously has a passion for transforming stock vehicles into beautiful pieces of work capable of performing beyond common standards. In fact, Lowe’s passion is even more specific as he specializes in Dodge and BMW vehicles. According to the Houston, Texas native, he tries to build a custom truck every few years.
Lowe recently rolled into Las Vegas, Nevada, eager to show his most recent endeavor at SEMA 2012. With countless hours of planning and manpower behind him, it was due time to display his 2012 Ram 2500.
“This was my second trip to SEMA as a builder, and third overall,” he recalled. “Each build takes about a year. As soon as SEMA is over, I take a few weeks off, then get to planning on my next truck. It takes dedication of great sponsors, like K&N, to build a truck like this in the timespan.”
Starting out with a 6.7 Cummins High-Output under the hood, Lowe opted to make a few modifications with intentions of acquiring optimal performance. He installed an Edge Juice Computer Controlled module to ensure perfect timing and accurate injector firing. In turn, the benefits would be three fold – “maximum performance, improved drivability, and better fuel economy.”
Aware that the best filtering system on the market was an essential element of keeping his engine contaminant free, Andrew Lowe automatically turned to K&N products. Referring to their capabilities, he said, “The first time I used K&N was in 2003, on a custom intake we built for my air-bagged 2003 Ram 1500 Hemi. K&N offers great benefits, from their lifetime warranty to the intake kits. If they don’t make an intake kit for the application, then their custom cones will always work with some fabrication skills. Easy to clean and reliable; what more do you want in an air filter.”
Proper air flow is essential from the time it enters the engine until it leaves the tailpipe. That in mind, Lowe installed a revised turbo and went with a Magnaflow custom twin-tip exhaust. Focusing on improving the integrity of the engines’ internal components, he went with ARP studs.
With work under the hood behind him, it was time to focus on other mechanical modifications that would improve the 4X4s durability, looks, and overall performance. Putting a Stage 4, eight-inch left under the rig, he then addressed the braking system, opting to install slotted rotors.
Aware that practically any build can be improved with making modifications “where the rubber meets the road”, the builder chose 24X12, three-piece RBP Revolver wheels. His next decision was as important as it was obvious – he had to choose the proper tires. Lowe opted to wrap 38X13.5X24 Nitto Tires around the wheels. The combination provided a showy appearance that could withstand the rigors handed out by a four-wheel-drive.
When the mechanical modifications were done, he consolidated his thoughts in a direction that would lead to what he anticipated would be one of the most eye-catching 4X4s at SEMA 2012. Lowe went to Extreme Customs, in Houston, Texas, where they applied a custom paint job with Du Pont custom colors.
With the scent of completion in the air, the Builder focused on the truck’s interior. Eager to provide onlookers with the total package, he chose Laramie Longhorn factory leather enhanced with color matched pieces and additional trim wrapped in matching leather, and the results were exactly what he had hoped for.
When asked if he found more pleasure in the build of his Gothic, Western Style Ram 2500, or most enjoyed driving the finished product, Lowe explained, “Both are equally fun; hearing the engine fire for the first time after working on it, or driving it away from the lights. They’re both great feelings!”.

Fox Racing Shox
FOX Racing Shox has a deep heritage in off road racing and they wanted to share some of that with us during the Outdoor Demo. From huge bypass shocks on their Baja trucks to the much smaller RP23 air shocks on our bikes, FOX is about racing and developing products that stand up to those rigors. Aaron Larocque and I had the pleasure of traveling from Las Vegas, NV to Sandy Valley, CA to experience first hand what it is like to drive a desert racing buggy. The buggies were all equipped with FOX Racing shocks and ready for action.
SoCal Says: It’s no surprise the Fox Racing Shox impressed and held up to the challenge. Fox continues to put out a stellar product which is always on the cutting edge. We highly recommend these shocks on your vehicle.
