How Do New GPS Systems Compare to an Old Garmin?

Radu Tudoroiu (“RT”), Romanian photographer and Off-Road Enthusiast, recently compared his old Garmin 279c to some newer GPS systems. He immediately noticed how a laptop with MapSource and Google Earth allowed him to view tracks and altitude differences, as well as getting a feel for the land, houses and actual birds-eye view of surroundings. He also started experimenting with an iPad with the MotionX app.

The article highlights some key things like battery life, which the Garmin dominated. That being said, an iPad with a car charger can take care of this issue. The next test was the map speed, which was tested in the dirt roads of Turkey and Georgia as well as in the mountains of Romania. Surprisingly, the iPad outperformed the laptop and both devices dominated the Garmin. When it came to durability, all three seemed to perform well (assuming you get a heavy duty case for the iPad and use a Panasonic Toughbook laptop). The last test was processing power and technology, which hands down went to the iPad.

Did you ever think about using the iPad for your Navigation needs? If not, this article shows that the iPad, with the right apps and protective cover, has the ability to help you navigate through some of the most challenging terrain on the planet.
